The theme for our 2023 annual session is Beloved Community II: Centering the Voices of the Next Generation.
To seed our conversations we will hear from three young Friends as Keynoters: Faith Cantu, Nora Lisette Cooke, and Daniel Lean-Moctezuma. Here are the short biographies they have shared with us.
Faith Cantu
I am a Freshman Sociology major that is pre-law at Howard University. I am from the Santa Cruz mountains and attended the Santa Cruz meeting growing up. As well that, I was in leadership for JYM up until last year. Now I am also on the Racial Justice Subcommittee for PACYM. Along with that, I am also on the General Committee for FCNL. I am excited to talk about the possible future of what Quakerism looks like.
Soy estudiante de primer año de Sociología, prederecho en la Universidad de Howard. Soy de las montañas de Santa Cruz. Asistí a la reunión de Santa Cruz mientras crecía. Estuve en el liderazgo de la Junta Anual de Jóvenes hasta el año pasado. También estoy en el Subcomité de Justicia Racial de la JA del Pacífico. Además estoy en el Comité de Amigos sobre Legislación Nacional. Estoy emocionada de hablar sobre el posible futuro del cuaquerismo.
Nora Lisette Cooke
I am a Quaker committed to living my life faithfully. This is a journey that is currently being informed through my work with families as a postpartum doula as well as the graduate work I am moving into in collective trauma and social healing. Spirit calls me to work with families, individuals, and communities to redirect rivers of trauma into paths of healing. I also bear a Truth that sacred conflict is imperative as we engage with our ecosystems at every layer, locally as well as globally. My faith is that this work can can slow us down into Right Relationship with creation as it unfolds in us, through us, and around us. 
Soy una cuáquera comprometida a vivir fielmente. Este viaje actualmente está siendo guiado por mi trabajo con familias como doula posparto, así como el trabajo de posgrado al que me estoy moviendo sobre trauma colectivo y sanación social. El Espíritu me llama a trabajar con familias, individuos y comunidades para redirigir los ríos de trauma hacia caminos de sanación. Cargo con la Verdad de que el conflicto sagrado es imperativo a medida que nos relacionamos con nuestros ecosistemas en cada capa, tanto a nivel local como global. Mi fe es que este trabajo pueda acercarnos hacia una Relación Correcta con la creación a medida que se desarrolla en nosotres, a través de nosotres y alrededor de nosotres.
Daniel Lean-Moctezuma
A Honduran Quaker, a queer Christian in the manner of Friends and a mental health worker in the Sula Valley, Northwestern Honduras. His work in the world is around mental health issues in marginalized communities. As a Friend he is under a concern for hospitality and intra-Quaker fellowship. Since 2020, both Daniel and Bertha Peña from Mexico, have sought to connect with other isolated Friends in Latin America who do not have a local Quaker connection or are unable to fit into the predominant branches of the Society of Friends in their countries. He is active in efforts related to racial and language justice, as a “Friend-at-large” he has been fortunate to befriend Quakers of all branches and in these encounters be moved by the Holy Spirit toward reconciling his spirituality and sexuality.
Un cuáquero hondureño, un cristiano queer a la manera de los Amigos y un trabajador de salud mental en el Valle de Sula, noroeste de Honduras. Su trabajo en el mundo gira en torno a problemas de salud mental en comunidades marginadas. Como Amigo, se preocupa por la hospitalidad y el compañerismo entre los cuáqueros. Desde 2020, tanto Daniel como Bertha Peña de México han buscado conectarse con otros Amigos aislados en Latinoamérica que no tienen una conexión cuáquera local o no pueden encajar en las ramas predominantes de la Sociedad de Amigos en sus países. Es activo en esfuerzos relacionados con la justicia racial y del lenguaje, como un “Amigo en lo amplio” ha tenido la suerte de hacer amistad con cuáqueros de todas las ramas y en estos encuentros ser movido por el Espíritu Santo hacia la reconciliación de su espiritualidad y sexualidad.
